Just a few minutes from Château de l'Abbatiale, the region reveals a rich and diverse heritage. Abbeys, characterful villages, historic sites and landmarks of the Great War shape the landscape. So many places to explore at your own pace, between culture, memory and architecture.

Saint-Yved Abbey in Braine

From your room, you can admire and then walk to Saint-Yved Abbey, one of the earliest examples of early Gothic architecture in France, built between 1180 and 1216 at the request of Agnès de Braine.

Listed as a Historic Monument since 1840, it preserves historic stained glass windows, polychrome statues and the tympanum of its central portal. The château once served as its residential annex: the two buildings have shared nine centuries of history.

The “Spanish” house of Braine
just steps from the château


The half-timbered house, known as the “Spanish” house, dates back to the 15th century. Listed as a Historic Monument since 1931, it is located on Place Charles de Gaulle, the main square of the town of Braine.

The house is topped with a small stone-roofed turret and has preserved a magnificent carriage entrance.

The International City of the French Language
Villers-Cotterêts, 30 minutes away


Inaugurated in 2023 within the château of François I, where the 1539 ordinance that made French the official language of the kingdom was signed, the International City of the French Language is one of the major cultural projects of recent years.

A museum, creative hub and residency space, it explores the history and global influence of the French language through immersive scenography. An essential visit, just thirty minutes from the château.

The Chemin des Dames and the Dragon’s Cave
20 minutes north of Braine


About twenty minutes north of Braine, the Chemin des Dames is one of the major sites of remembrance of the First World War.

The Dragon’s Cave, a former underground quarry transformed into a barracks by the Germans from 1915 and later into a museum, offers guided tours 14 metres below ground. A striking memorial experience, recognised at European level. Booking recommended.

Fort de Condé
Chivres-Val, 20 minutes away


Built at the end of the 19th century to protect Soissons, Fort de Condé stands in the village of Chivres-Val, with its white stone walls, unique artillery room and arboretum.

A site that is both historical and bucolic, offering beautiful views over the Aisne and Vesle valleys, as well as suspended net courses for the more adventurous.

Soissons and its abbeys
just 20 minutes away


A Merovingian capital and a Gothic city, Soissons is well worth half a day. Saint-Gervais-et-Saint-Protais Cathedral, the Abbey of Saint-Jean-des-Vignes with its majestic ruins, and the crypt of Saint-Médard Abbey: the city surprises with its Art Deco architecture from the reconstruction period, still little known to the general public.

Laon and its medieval city
40 minutes away


Perched on a hill 100 metres high, Laon is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in northern France. Its Gothic cathedral, ramparts and cobbled streets make it an ideal destination for a day trip.

Do not miss the panoramic view over the Picardy plains from the ramparts.

The Ghosts by Landowski
Butte de Chalmont, 20 minutes away


A little-known monumental work, The Ghosts is an 8-metre granite memorial sculpted by Paul Landowski, the artist behind Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro. Inaugurated in 1935 at the top of Butte de Chalmont in Oulchy-le-Château, it commemorates the Battle of the Marne in 1914. A striking work set on a hillside, which reveals its full impact in the open air.

Coucy Castle
30 minutes away


Once one of the most powerful medieval fortresses in Europe, Coucy Castle has dominated the Aisne plain since the 13th century. Although partially destroyed in 1917, its monumental listed ruins remain impressive and are well worth a visit.

Activities to fully enjoy the surrounding nature


Around Château de l'Abbatiale, the landscapes are ideal for a wide range of outdoor activities. Walks, hikes, cycling or sports: the region offers the perfect setting to stay active, explore and enjoy nature, at your own pace and according to your wishes.

Hiking and cycling


Braine is the starting point for a beautiful walking loop that passes through the flower-filled village of Limé, across woodland, meadows and farmland. For cyclists, the Vesle à Vélo route follows the river towards Fismes, with many heritage stops along the way.

Mountain bikers will find technical trails on the heights of the Chemin des Dames, with stunning viewpoints. Electric bike rental is available in Soissons and will soon be available at the château.

Water sports, horse riding and golf


The Axo’Plage leisure centre offers swimming and family activities in season, while the Pommiers water sports centre provides canoeing and kayaking trips on the Aisne river.

The Rozé stables welcome both experienced riders and beginners for guided rides through the valley. The Soissons golf course, open 7 days a week, is just 20 minutes away.
